The Consciousness Test
How aware are you really?
We all think we're conscious. We're awake, we're thinking, we're aware. But consciousness isn't binary—it's a spectrum. And most of us are far less conscious than we believe.
The Test
Here's a simple test. Throughout your day, notice:
- How often are you truly present? Not planning, not remembering, but fully here.
- How often do you react automatically? Without choosing, just following your programming.
- How aware are you of your body? Your breath, your posture, your tensions.
- How often do you notice your thoughts? Not just think them, but observe them.
- How frequently do you pause before speaking or acting? Creating space for choice.
The Reality Check
If you're honest, you'll find that most of your day is spent on autopilot. You're technically conscious, but not truly aware. You're reacting, not responding. You're thinking, not observing your thoughts.
This isn't a judgment—it's an invitation to wake up.
Levels of Consciousness
- Sleep: Unconscious, dreaming
- Waking sleep: Going through motions, on autopilot
- Ordinary consciousness: Aware of surroundings and tasks
- Self-awareness: Aware of being aware
- Witness consciousness: Observing without identification
- Unity consciousness: Experiencing oneness with all
Most of us fluctuate between waking sleep and ordinary consciousness. Moments of true self-awareness are rare. Witness consciousness even rarer. Unity consciousness—those are peak experiences we might touch once or twice in a lifetime.
The Practice
Consciousness isn't fixed—it can be developed. Simple practices:
- Set hourly reminders to check: "Am I present?"
- Take three conscious breaths before any transition
- Notice your body position right now
- Observe one thought without following it
- Pause before every response
The Invitation
